About that Charlie Crist/Joe Biden meal in Miami
Beth Reinhard: The rumor going around is that Gov. Charlie Crist -- who would only deign to give President Barack Obama a 27-second handshake last week in Tampa -- had wined and dined with Vice President Joe Biden when he came to Miami last month to talk about the recovery in Haiti.
Apparently their dinner at Il Gabbiano in downtown Miami was noted in the celebrity tabloid US Weekly, but this reporter was unable to confirm that because she reads only high-minded, serious magazines like Entertainment Weekly and InStyle. The conservative RedState blog referred to a breakfast between the Republican governor and Democratic vice president.
But Biden's office says there was no dinner, and Crist says there was no breakfast, lunch or coffee break either. "The only time I've seen him was on the tarmac with the president the other day,'' Crist said yesterday.
Where is this rumor coming from? Perhaps it stems from Biden being credited with helping convert Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter to the Democratic party. A Biden-Crist rendezvous fits the narrative spun by Crist critics that he's a phony Republican.
