ALF bill passes House, waits on Senate

After a Miami Herald investigation revealed years of rampant abuse and neglect in some assisted living facilities, legislators promised sweeping reform to crack down on dangerous homes.

Today, House members passed HB 7133, a bill that would require higher training standards for ALF employees, increase inspections for ALFs that break the rules, and impose a $10,000 penalty on homes that cause a resident's death. The vote was 114-0.

Rules Chair Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, also announced today he's removing a similar bill in the Senate from its final committee, which keeps the measure alive by making it eligible for a floor hearing.

Of the two bills, SB 2074 contains harsher consequences for ALFs that break the rules. Bill sponsors Sen. Rene Garcia, R-Hialeah, and Rep. Eddy Gonzalez, R-Hialeah Gardens, say they're working together to strike a compromise on the bills' contents.
