Allen West raising money for Hillsborough GOP, and seeking some love in return
Rookie South Florida Rep. Allen West will raise money for Hillsborough County Republicans on July 23, speaking at an "issues and ideas" dinner in Plant City.
A VIP reception costs $250 and dinner tickets are $30 ($50 per couple), according to an invite. The event will be held at Arthur Boring Civic Center, on the Strawberry Festival grounds.
A speech from a far-flung congressman would normally be about an attractive as the rubber chicken served up, but West is a dynamic figure and tea party hero. The $1.5 million he raised in the second quarter underscores his appeal far beyond his district, and why some want him to run for U.S. Senate or president.
"I'm fine right where I am," West told the Buzz yesterday.
West is exploiting his profile.
He has sent out fundraising appeals across the country, and now one has landed in Hillsborough County. "President Obama's left-wing allies at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee want to defeat our principles so badly they have named me their #1 target for 2012!" he wrote in a four-page letter that just showed up in Republican mailboxes. Read the letter here and here.
