Any candidates for the gauntlet? PSC opens process for new applications

April

The Public Service Commission Nominating Council just released the following call for applications for the two positions recently opened by the Senate's rejection of Gov. Charlie Crist's two picks. Download Press Release 2010 KS PSC vacancy

The deadline is May 17. What the application doesn't say is that the applicants must first squeeze through a reviewing process that includes a recommendation from the legislatively controlled council, then appointed by the consumer-friendly governor and finally confirmed by the utility-lobbied state Senate which just rejected two commissioners for being either unqualified or not racially diverse. It does say that the position pays $130,036.

Council chairman Lee Constantine hopes to have the applicants be interviewed by June 17 and then move to the second round of interviews for the remaining two openings - the positions now held by Commissioners Nancy Argenziano and Nathan Skop whose term expires this year. (Both are expected to reapply.)

Will the recent rejection by the Senate have a chilling effect on potential applicants? "I would hope not,'' Constantine said. "For public service, there is always going to be good Floridians to apply."
