Atwater borrows Barack's message
But in his re-election campaign, he is attaching himself to the Barack Obama banner of "change." And as this mailer shows, the North Palm Beach Republican is ignoring the fact that he was first elected in 2000. To the voters in Senate District 25, he's regular old Jeff Atwater.
Atwater is facing Broward County Democratic activist Linda Bird, who replaced Skip Campbell last week. Through March, Atwater has raised $1.6-million, and he controls a CCE called Preserve The American Dream.
Atwater's consultant, Rick Wilson, cautioned against over analyzing the message of the flier. But Democrats smell an interloper.
“I think that it is ironic that Atwater, as a member of the Republican leadership that gave us the current economic recession and skyrocketing insurance rates, is trying to pick up the mantel of change. When voters force his retirement by choosing change on Election Day, Atwater will see that voters are smarter than he is giving them credit for,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesman Eric Jotkoff.
The Palm Beach Post Q bloq first reported the flier.
