Atwater to name senators to explore gambling plan
Senate President Jeff Atwater is expected to follow the House's lead by appointing a team of lawmakers to review the governor's compact with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and prepare a recommendation for how legislators should proceed with an agreement with the tribe.
On the committee will be Sen. Dennis Jones, the Republican chairman of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee which is charged with oversight of the parimutuel industry, Sen. Alex Villalobos, the Miami Republican who is Senate rules chairman and Sen. Ted Deutch, a Boca Raton Democrat.
Meanwhile. the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the tribe's last ditch appeal of the Florida Supreme Court ruling black flag dead. It denied the motion to review the state ruling that invalidated the compact, leaving the tribe in a tenuous position of operating slot machines and blackjack without the legal authority required under federal law.
