Axelrod on Romney video: 'We're obviously looking at that'

Obama strategist David Axelrod, in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times editorial board this afternoon, said the secret Mitt Romney video recording is "getting quite a bit of attention on its own," but added the campaign was "obviously looking at that."

Axelrod did not say whether the campaign would turn it into an ad, though it already produced a web video showing voters reacting with disgust to Romney's comment about half of the country being dependent on government.

"It did speak to an out-of-touchness that was startling," Axelrod said. "To denigrate half the country and suggest that somehow half of our nation are people who see themselves as victims and who aren't willing to take personal responsibility for their own lives was shocking and demeaning. I don't know how you can govern this country if that's what you believe."

Axelrod also said he was confident of Obama's chances of a repeat win in Florida.

"We're very much encouraged by what we see in Florida. We believe we have a lead in Florida. It's not a large lead. Florida's a battleground state for a reason," he said. "But people have heard a lot of the arguments for some time now ... and we've seen our vote slowly but surely grow in Florida to the point where we feel very good about our chances. We are aggressively organized in this state. We just made an additional financial commitment to the state, and started buying television in the Miami market, which, as you know, is quite expensive. So we're all in in Florida. ... We believe President Obama is much more in tune with the concerns of average Floridians, that his vision for the future holds out greater possibility and hope."
