Bill Clinton: I spoke with Meek twice
Bill Clinton told CNN Thursday night that he talked to Kendrick Meek about ending his bid for Senate twice, but that he never discussed the issue with the White House.
“He was trying to determine what was the best thing for him to do,” Clinton said. “I knew it was being discussed, people had discussed it on and off… it was no secret.” Clinton said Meek did not have enough money to break through in the polls. “He was trying to think about what was the best thing for Florida,” Clinton said.
A White House official told the St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald that the WH became aware of the talks after they began and took the position of letting it "play out." Reporting by the Washington Post indicates Crist reached out to Clinton's people, something Crist acknowledged on Fox, adding that he subsequently talked with people at the White House. He would not name anyone.
The New York Times added, "officials familiar with the private discussions said Mr. Crist had made it clear that he would support Democrats in the Senate if he won."
