Bill Nelson, eye on 2012, flips position on earmark ban
Sen. Bill Nelson was one of seven Democrats who voted today in favor of a ban on earmarks, a reversal of his position that not all earmarks are bad and a sign he's prepping for the 2012 re-election campaign.
It was symbolic only; the amendment failed with 56 votes against and 39 in favor. Republican Sen. George LeMieux voted for the ban. (More here)
Asked about the change, Nelson spokesman Dan McLaughlin said, "These are unusual (economic) times. ... Going forward Sen. Nelson will keep looking for ways to cut spending, while also fighting to make sure Florida gets its fair share of federal funding for things like ports, military bases and major projects that bring new jobs."
