Bill Nelson lashes out at Ted Cruz for questioning of Chuck Hagel
The Senate Armed Services Committee voted 14-11 to approve Chuck Hagel as defense secretary, passing the nomination on to the full chamber. But not before some bitter sniping between members, including Florida Sen. Bill Nelson and Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.
Nelson said Cruz went over the line by questioning whether Hagel got payments from "extreme and radical groups." Cruz wanted Hagel to provide five years of financial records, not the standard two.
"He basically has impugned the patriotism of the nominee," Nelson said. "You also stated your opinion that you don't think he has been truthfu with this committee. Those are two fairly strong statements."
Sen. John McCain later added: "Sen. Hagel is an honorable man. No one on this committee should impugn his character and integrity."
