Bill would establish 'Florida Polytechnic' -- now

Never mind the delay voted on by state university system leaders last year — a new, independent polytechnic university could be right around the corner if a bill filed late Wednesday goes through.

The bill, which showed up at the end of the agenda for a 5 p.m. Senate higher education appropriations committee meeting, calls for "Florida Polytechnic" to be completely independent and autonomous in state statute. It would establish its own board of trustees, hire its own president and hire its own faculty.

It would transfer all property, licenses, associated revenues, contracts, balances, appropriations, foundation money and other funds from USF to the new independent university.

And it authorizes the University of Florida to serve in an advisory role to the new university.

Developing story here.
