Bill would make Board of Governors student member appointed by governor

8

December

Now this is interesting.

On Wednesday, Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz filed a bill that would remove the president of the Florida Student Association from the Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the state university, and instead require the governor to appoint that student member for his or her yearlong term.

The state constitution now spells out that of the 17 Board of Governors members, 14 are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate for a term of seven years. The remaining members include the president of the advisory council of the Faculty Senate, the Commissioner of Education and the Chair of the Florida Student Association. The current student member is Michael Long, the sophomore student body president from New College.

You might recall that a month ago, Long had a face-off with powerful state Sen. JD Alexander during a Board of Governors meeting -- before the board decided to delay Alexander's push to make the University of South Florida Polytechnic an independent institution. Long was the only person of the 15 sitting around the table who called the bullish Alexander out for what Long said was behind the scenes intimidation. After the meeting, Long said Alexander told him his career in politics was over.

Now here comes a bill that would change the process for those who follow in Long's footsteps. And it was filed by the son of Don Gaetz, who showed up to that same Board of Governors meeting in support of Alexander's push.

Interesting.
