Bill Young, once again, one of top defense earmarkers
That topped the $76.5 million Defense Appropriations Chairman John Murtha, D-Penn., got in the budget, which is awaiting Senate approval, according to an analysis by Taxpayers for Common Sense.
Young, R-Indian Shores, turned 79 on Wednesday and is in his 20th term. A longtime appropriator, he defends earmarks as good for military development and for the economy of Tampa Bay, where he steers much of the money to contractors there.A list of Young's earmarks is here. The analysis leaves out military construction, such as the $42 million for a parking garage at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, which are part of a different bill.
