Bill Young, once again, one of top defense earmarkers

Youngmug U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young has proven his power and longevity once again, securing 36 defense earmarks worth $83.7 million.

That topped the $76.5 million Defense Appropriations Chairman John Murtha, D-Penn., got in the budget, which is awaiting Senate approval, according to an analysis by Taxpayers for Common Sense.

Young, R-Indian Shores, turned 79 on Wednesday and is in his 20th term. A longtime appropriator, he defends earmarks as good for military development and for the economy of Tampa Bay, where he steers much of the money to contractors there.

A list of Young's earmarks is here. The analysis leaves out military construction, such as the $42 million for a parking garage at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, which are part of a different bill.
