A Bodyguard for McAuliffe
Pro-wrestler-turned-campaign manager Mitch Kates says he's been asked to be a bodyguard for Terry McAuliffe at the Democratic fundraiser's book signing Friday night. "The publicist is worried there might be hecklers in the crowd," Kates explained. Kates wrestled under the name "Jason the Terrible" and brandished an axe in publicity photos before making the switch to politics. For this gig, though, he says, "I don't need no stinkin' axe." Kates, who led Charlie Justice's successful campaign for the Florida Senate, is now working for Tampa City Council candidate Mary Mulhern. Could the appearance with McAuliffe mean Kates might join Hillary Clinton's campaign team? "I'm uncommitted at this moment," said Kates, who threw his muscle behind John Kerry's presidential bid in 2004. McAuliffe will plug his book What a Party! Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Tampa Tribune auditorium at 202 S. Parker St. in Tampa.
