Bomb squad called to Capitol
UPDATE 7:03 p.m: A spokesman for the Senate sergeant-at-arms office said the package was detonated shortly before 7 p.m. in a basement parking garage without incident. The contents: plastic bags.
UPDATE 6:13 p.m.: Rubio now says no one can go below the second floor, making an exit difficult this evening. The House session has just ended. "Maybe we can go out with a bang," Rubio joked.
UPDATE 5:57 p.m.: House Speaker Marco Rubio just announced there will be "selective" evacuations in the complex. But the mood remains calm.
A bomb squad is investigating a suspicious package discovered this afternoon outside the Capitol, police said. "We are not evacuating the Capitol at this time," said FDLE spokeswoman Heather Smith.
The package was found during a screening at the service drive, according to a e-mail alert from the Capitol Police. Big Bend Regional Bomb Squad is on scene. We will post any updates. (Times photo | Scott Keeler)
