BP's $93 million ad blitz
BP spent $93 million on advertising from April through July, more than three times what it spent during the same period in 2009, according to information provided to a House committee at the request of Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa.
"While BP certainly has the right to advertise," Castor said, "its approach has been insensitive to the taxpayers and business owners harmed by the Deepwater Horizon blowout. BP should use a significant portion of its advertising dollars to ease the strain on Florida small businesses that rely on tourism."
Still, the Committee on Energy and Commerce also found that BP paid $89.5 million to oil-affected states, including Florida, to promote tourism.
