Brian Ballard's Super Bowl guest
Uber-lobbyist Brian Ballard, known for his fun Super Bowl parties, snared the ultimate guest on Sunday: Gov. Rick Scott, who incidentally campaigned against the influence of special interests. Also in attendance: Robert Coker, of U.S. Sugar, whose state landbuyout Scott opposed in the Republican primary when the Clewiston firm backed GOP rival Bill McCollum (as did Ballard). Scott dropped his vocal opposition to the landbuy when U.S. Sugar backed him after the primary.
But that was sooooo 2010. The Super Bowl party was just that -- a party, said Ballard.
"What could be more American than a bunch of friends getting together to watch the Super Bowl?" Ballard asked rhetorically when queried about his party.
Ballard somewhat reluctantly acknowledged Scott was in attendance, and said backers of Scott's where there. He wouldn't name names and would say no more. When initially asked about his party, Ballard said via text message "Pack won, I heard." Ballard, incidentally represents the Rooney family, which owns the Pittsburgh Steelers, for whom he rooted.
Whom did Scott support? Ballard said he didn't know.
Ballard said no state business was discussed, and he downplayed the idea that he had some insidere access on behalf of his clients. Of course, Scott would never meet with insiders and discuss Capitol business.... Oh... wait.... he did last night at a dinner with top Senate lawmakers. The difference between that meeting and the Super Bowl party: The gov's office noted the dinner on his official schedule. No notice was given for the lobbyist party.
Regardless, Scott's budget is so radical and makes so many deep cuts that some of Ballard's clients win and some lose. Here they are:
