Burgin confirms she is considering a Senate run
State Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview, says she wants to hear from key constituents before she decides whether she will be seeking the Senate seat her friend Ronda Storms is leaving.
"I think there is a significant opportunity, and at the same time a void for conservative leadership" being created by the departure of Storms, Burgin said. Both Burgin and Storms share similar fiscal and socially conservative ideologies.
There are a number of names being thrown about as potential candidates, from former Senate President Tom Lee, to state Rep. Shawn Harrison and Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham, among others. Burgin said she has a base of support after four years in House District 56 (soon to be District 59) to compete both for votes and campaign dollars. Her House district fits nearly entirely inside the Senate district.
"If I decide to run I really don’t care about who could get in the race," Burgin said
