Calling Allen West a 'right wing extremist,' Democrat launches early bid for 2012
Patrick Murphy, a young South Florida Democrat who works in the environmental business, has launched an early bid against Congressman Allen West and is casting him as a "right wing extremist" who is out of touch with the district. Below, a web video that accompanied his announcement.
Murphy may have to contend with a number of Democrats eager to take on tea party-backed West, including the man West defeated in November: Ron Klein. Klein recently took a job with the "government advocacy" arm of Holland & Knight but has stressed he will not be a registered lobbyist. Klein has not ruled out seeking office again.
West, R-Plantation, is no pushover. He raised millions and his growing profile in Washington may only make him stronger on that front. At the same time, his polarizing views could make him a bigger target, ala Alan Grayson, the now former Democratic lawmaker from Orlando.
