Can this marriage amendment be saved?
Social conservative stalwart John Stemberger got steamrolled in 2006 when he committed to support Tom Gallagher in the race for governor. Now the Orlando trial lawyer's latest crusade, to put a ban on same-sex marriage in Florida's Constitution, is in such trouble that he has sent out an urgent call for more petitions after the state's recalculation of county-by-county totals left the group 22,000 signatures short of the 611,000 needed to make the ballot in November.
The deadline for verification of all signatures is Feb. 1.
The leading group opposing Stemberger's Florida4Marriage.org, Florida Red and Blue, issued a statement that said in part: "Supporters of the so-called Marriage Protection Amendment have been collecting signatures for years. They have had ample time to turn in sufficient signatures to qualify their petition."
