Cannon mum on Steinberg's "Sexxxy Mama" texting scandal

House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, is not ready to take any action over the case of Rep. Richard Steinberg, a Miami Beach Democrat who on Wednesday admitted to sending inappropriate text messages to a Miami female federal prosecutor.

Cannon said he has not spoken to Steinberg about it, and that he only knows what has been reported in the newspaper about Steinberg, who is under investigation for stalking. His unsolicited text messages to Assistant U.S. Attorney Marlene Fernandez-Karavetsos referred to her as “Sexxxy Mama” and asked about her newborn son.

Steinberg was not present during the House Session on Thursday.

“He requested an excused absence for the day, we granted it,” Cannon said. “Certainly some disturbing allegations about him but it’s not my place to comment on that.”

Cannon, who has two more weeks to bring this year’s legislative to a smooth landing despite a few major discrepancies between key legislation in the House and Senate, didn’t see Steinberg as a priority.

“I haven’t talked to him about it, and it’s too soon,” he said. “It sounds like a terrible circumstance, whatever it may be, but I don’t want to get into it.”
