Chamber poll: Floridians oppose teacher tenure, want merit pay

A new Jan. 29-Feb 2 statewide poll of 610 registered Florida by Cherry Communications for the Florida Chamber of Commerce (MoE  +/- 4%;  47% Democrats, 42% Republicans, and 11% other) found overwhelming support for education reforms expected to be pushed through by state leaders this year, and serious skepticism about teacher unions: 

·         QUESTION: Do you favor or oppose merit pay for teachers?
o   Favor – 59.68%
o   Oppose – 31.81%
·         QUESTION: Do you favor or oppose giving Florida teachers tenure?
o   Favor – 35.74%
o   Oppose – 56.73%
·         QUESTION: Do you believe teacher unions are looking out mainly for themselves and their union members or in the best interest of our children’s education?
o   In the best interest of our children – 18.69%
o   For themselves and their union members – 68.03%
o   Undecided – 12.46%
