Charlie Crist and George Lemieux's relationship: It's complicated

Florida's junior U.S. Senator, George LeMieux, stopped by the editorial board of the St. Petersburg Times Friday to talk about the oil spill, the economy and of course, Charlie Crist.

LeMieux, who Crist appointed to fill Mel Martinez's Senate seat and who served as Crist's chief of staff and campaign manager, called his relationship with Crist "awkward."

The two spoke recently about the oil spill.

"We're still friends. It's awkward as you might expect now. But I still value his friendship," LeMieux said.

When asked whether he essentially turned his back on Crist, LeMieux said:

"I value my ideals and principles more than I value his political decision. I will always be his friend. If he needs me on any personal level, I will always be there for him. But now more than ever, I am committed to the principles of my party."
