Charlie Crist demands another $50 million from BP for Florida cleanup

After another aerial tour of the oil slick washing closer to Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist sent a letter Thursday to BP America president Lamar McKay demanding $50 million more in cash to assist in the state's cleanup efforts. Download 2010.6.3 Letter to BP 50M Preparation[1]

Crist's letter follows a stern demand by Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink that BP CEO Tony Hayward appear before the governor and Cabinet on Tuesday "to explain your plan to protect Florida’s economy and environment, and provide an update on BP’s compensation requests from Florida businesses."

Attorney General Bill McCollum also sent an angry letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder saying: "It is unacceptable that prior to this catastrophe no effort appears to have been made to encourage, evaluate and deploy new technologies that hold great potential to be much more effective at mitigating damages than those now in use that are the same as the technologies used in the Exxon Valdez spill.''
