Charlie Crist: Don't trust Marco Rubio
FROM: ERIC EIKENBERG, CHARLIE CRIST FOR U.S. SENATE CAMPAIGN MANAGER
RE: RUBIO CAMPAIGN MEMO
DATE: JANUARY 11, 2010
It was a pleasure to see many of you this weekend. It was also great to discuss our campaign and to hear the wonderful words of support and encouragement from around the state.
This afternoon you received a memorandum from the Marco Rubio campaign attacking Governor Crist regarding the federal stimulus. I’m not going to take up your time responding to this unfortunate attack, instead you heard directly from the Governor regarding his view of the stimulus. The Governor was clear during his speech before the committee this past Saturday, and you saw for yourselves his sincerity and genuineness.
However, I want to take this opportunity and provide you with a video clip of Rubio’s direct comments regarding the stimulus. Rubio originally claimed if he had been governor that he would not have accepted stimulus funds and instead would have balanced the budget. Of course, later, he admitted that he too – like 101 of 102 of his former Republican colleagues – would have accepted stimulus dollars, flip-flopping on his stance and, as Politico called it “backing away from his unstinting opposition to the stimulus.”
Watch Rubio in his own words admit he would have accepted stimulus funds HERE.
As National Journal wrote at the time, “Ex-FL House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) seems to have changed his position on stimulus funding, now saying he would have accepted federal money headed to his state. But that's not what he said earlier this year. In an interview with the Herald/Times in Aug., Rubio suggested … that he would not have taken stimulus money offered by the federal government.”
As we continue throughout this campaign, it is important to make sure that everyone has a true depiction of where the candidates stand on the issues. Governor Crist has made tough decisions in the best interest of all Floridians, and he will continue to do so as the next U.S. Senator from Florida.
Again, it was great to see you all this weekend, and I look forward to seeing you again soon on the campaign trail.
