Charlie Crist uses Jeb Bush to explain his party change
Charlie Crist was on Hardball and Piers Morgan on Monday and in both instances used a comment from Jeb Bush earlier this year in which he said his father and Ronald Reagan would have a tough time fitting in with the Republican Party today. Chris Matthews asked Crist if he would accept all the mainstream Democratic arguments and, without pausing, Crist said, "Yes, yeah, sure."
It will up to Florida voters to decide whether they believe Crist's conversion, but his telling leaves out important context. Crist left the GOP because he was not going to win the GOP Senate primary against Marco Rubio. He initially cast himself as the true conservative but Rubio kept surging. To keep his hopes alive, Crist became an independent.
