Chavez looming, House says yes to Colombia

16

April

Though it seemed dead, for the day, the Colombian free trade resolution surfaced again, over Democratic objection. And it passed 83-27 after this zinger from sponsor Juan Zapata:

"If you vote against this resolution, you are voting with Hugo Chavez."

Replied Rep. Dan Gelber, the Democratic leader who tried to stop the measure from being voted on right away. “I respect my friend, Rep. Zapata, notwithstanding his recent personal attacks. I expect more from us. It is regrettable that with the legislature poised to cut children’s catastrophic healthcare coverage, seniors losing hospice care and the historic gutting of public education, we are drawn into election year stunts that do nothing to address the real anxieties Floridians face today. With that said, I forgive him."
