Cheers to Amendment 5

Beermug Putting policy arguments aside, the Florida Supreme Court this week robbed Tallahassee of some great political theater when it killed off Amendment 5.

Not only would there be an intense, expensive campaign (broadcasters already had attack ads in the can) for the Nov. 4 vote, but if it passed, a fascinating legislative battle would have ensued over the next two sessions.

Imagine Sen. Mike Haridopolos railing against the gaping hole in the education budget, his political fortunes literally soaring or crashing on the issue. Picture former Sen. John McKay demanding a repeal of sales tax exemptions or even daring to suggest a services tax. How about the jam lawmakers would be in by approving a higher sales tax? "Hi, I'm Charlie Crist and I approve this tax increase." The debate certainly would play out in the 2010 gubernatorial race as well.

So, as happy hour approaches, here's to what could have been ...
