Clay Shaw on Senate: 'My phone's not ringing'

Shaw Former Congressman Clay Shaw, R-Fort Lauderdale, is apparently not in the mix for the vacant U.S. Senate seat.

“If I am on the list, I certainly think someone would have gotten in touch with me. My phone’s not ringing,” he said Tuesday. “I’ve been keeping up with the news on the blogs.”

Shaw said he would like the job but said U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young -- the newest name to emerge -- would make a fine choice. “If he’s ready to retire, I can see why he’d take a good look at it. The amount of experience he brings to the table is unmatched in Florida. He’s been an appropriations chairman and negotiates directly with the Senate. Bill would be a terrific choice.”

But if Young were to leave, that would open up a Congressional seat Charlie Justice and the Democrats have been angling to win. “It would be a shame to lose that seat,” Shaw said, “but sooner or later, Bill’s going to retire.”
