Cleland Visit Sparks Biting Exchange

RPOF's Carole Jean Jordan issued a statement denouncing the stances of Georgia's former Senator and the local Democrats he campaigned with this weekend. Max Cleland is a veteran who lost both of his legs and his right arm in Vietnam and was awarded a Silver Star. A few excerpts [Full statement posted in "comments"]:

  • "Max Cleland, better than I ever could, reminds Floridians that we face a clear choice in the upcoming elections....Jim Davis, Rod Smith, and Phyllis Busansky have clearly chosen the 'cut and run' faction of the Democrat Party."
  • Voters are not attracted by Cleland's "dreadful national security record" and "hypocritical attacks against the President during a time of war"

Excerpts from Phyllis Busansky's response (full statement is here):

  • "When you attack Max Cleland you attack every veteran who ever served.... “My opponent Gus Bilirakis should repudiate Chairman Jordan’s "shameful attack"
  • “…Does Gus Bilirakis agree with Vice President Dick Cheney’s assessment ... that the “progress has been steady” in Iraq?”

"It didn’t appear to anyone else that Max Cleland was really attacked," said Bilirakis’ campaign manager, Rob Whitney, who described Jordan's statement as a historical picture of Democrats’ “flip-flopping” on Iraq and the war on terror.
