Clock starts for Gov. Rick Scott to decide on splitting off USF Polytechnic into state's 12th university

6

April

Gov. Rick Scott received SB 1994 Postsecondary Education today, along with several other bills. This one would create Florida Polytechnic, the state's 12th university, and is the priority of Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales.

Scott, who has until April 21 to decide on the legislation, has not said what he will do.

In an interview with the Times/Herald last week, he said, "The question on one side is going to be, is this something that we can afford. Can we afford a 12th university when we know it's difficult. The other side of it is that people in the Lakeland area think they're underserved. It's going to be something I believe in — science, technology, engineering and math — so that's a real positive. But there's lots of arguments."

The fight over USF Polytechnic has been a fierce one led by Alexander, who bypassed a plan approved by the state's Board of Governors by pushing through this bill.
