Cretul and Sands, best buds
House Speaker Larry Cretul is giving Democrats hope.
Cretul, R-Ocala, called Minority Leader Franklin Sands over the weekend and the two met for about 20 minutes this morning in the speaker's office. "We discussed a whole myriad of issues. It was a very cordial meeting," Sands said. "I just look forward to working with him. ... I'm cautiously optimistic that we're opening an era of new openness and bipartisanship."
Sands was reluctant to say what was discussed but topics included committee assignments and the organizational structure of the chamber.
Newly deposed Speaker Ray Sansom also reached out to Sands in the beginning but Sands said there was little communication after that, especially during the recent special session on budget cuts. "I'm optimistic that we might have a voice at the table, which I didn't feel we had last time," Sands said.
Cretul is now occupying Sansom's former office (the move happened over the weekend) and Sansom is in Cretul's old office.
