Cringe: Tiger Bay group blithely speculates Bill Young could be "too sick" to run again

The Suncoast Tiger Bay Club tends to be provocative when they tout upcoming speakers. But their tease for a forum Tuesday featuring Democratic congressional candidates Jessica Ehrlich and Nina Hayden, running to unseat CW Bill Young, may have crossed a line. From the blurb:

"... Which candidate has the strongest war-chest and toughest  grassroots campaign to be victorious and ultimately face Bill Young who hasn’t lost a campaign in over 40 years?  Do      these candidates pose a credible risk to Young or are they lambs to the slaughter?  What if Young drops out or is too sick to campaign? Join us in the den to meet these two congressional candidates and ask about how they would change Washington."

Too sick to campaign? Yeesh. Would they have said that about Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni or DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who have fought cancer?

Young spokesman Harry Glenn said the 81-year-old congressman was surprised by the Tiger Bay flier, and noted that a year ago the group noted that their best attended event of 2010 featured Young, a longtime Tiger Bay member himself.

"If you were at Bay Pines and the other four Memorial Day events, where 4,000 people saw a pretty good series of speeches from a guy who started at about 8 a.m. and finished that night, I don't think you'd ask that question," Glenn said.

Nobody from Tiger Bay called the congressman to apologize, he said, though the group scrubbed that part of the text from its Web site.
