Crist helping Grant raise money
Gov. Charlie Crist will depart from his mid-week stay in Orlando and will fly to Siesta Key Thursday (via private plane, his office says) to attend a $250-per-person fund-raiser for Republican Rep. Michael Grant of Port Charlotte. This is a rare case of Crist taking sides in a contested Republican primary, as Grant is being opposed by former Rep. Nancy Detert of Venice in the District 23 seat that covers parts of Charlotte, Manatee and Sarasota counties.
Asked why he's backing Grant, Crist said: "I'm endorsing Michael Grant because I have great faith and confidence in his ability to be a member of the Florida Senate, and I think he will serve there incredlbly well." Grant has raised $335,000 so far and has a 3-to-1 fund-raising advantage over Detert, but she has the support of term-limited Sen. Lisa Carlton, whose departure opened up this hotly-contested race. Some recent donors to Detert's campaign include Tampa political consultant Adam Goodman, former Reps. Frank Farkas of St. Petersburg and Sandra Murman of Tampa and Tallahassee lobbyists Mike Corcoran and David Custin.
