Crist hopeful Florida will get waiver for federal education money

Gov. Charlie Crist said today he's hopeful U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will grant Florida a waiver so the state can cash in on $3.5 billion in federal economic stimulus money earmarked for education in Florida. Crist said he discussed the matter with Duncan on Sunday during a "productive" meeting at the White House.

“If any of my fellow Floridians want to encourage the secretary, that would be helpful, too,” Crist said.

Florida is at risk of not getting the full amount because the economic stimulus bill requires states to maintain certain funding levels to get more education money. And with its recent budget cuts, Florida falls short. But the bill does allow the education secretary to grant a waiver "in cases of hardship."

Crist made his remarks today while at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa to sign a proclamation declaring March "Seagrass Awareness Month."
