Crist Meeting Cordial with NAACP
Gov. Crist met with with Adora Obi Nweze, president of the Florida NAACP conference on Wednesday. The topics included: restoring voting rights to ex-felons, juvenile justice, criminal justice, education and health care disparities.
When it comes to restoring civil rights for ex-felons who have served their time, a "bread and butter" issue for the NAACP, Obi Nweze said Crist did not make any promises. But she didn't ask him to make any promises.
"First of all, he's only been there for a little while," Obi Nweze said. "We were simply saying it's a priority and here are some of the things we should look at doing."
After the meeting, Crist later told reporters that he was committed to the issue, but he didn't offer any details.
Obi Nweze said that her meeting was cordial and that she is looking forward to working with a governor with whom she already has a relationship.
"You expect us to start off and finish in a way that would yield a slight bit of difference than it did with Jeb," she said. "We have each other's cell phone number. We can get each other. I didn't have that with Jeb or any other governor for that matter."
Crist agreed: "Any time I can have the opportunity to learn from her is very special to me."
