Cruz, Chamberlin win state House District 58 primary
It appears Democrat Janet Cruz and Republican Hunter Chamberlin will face each other in the special general election for the District 58 state House seat on Feb. 23. The winner replaces Democrat Michael Scionti, who resigned last month to take a job with the Department of Defense.
Tuesday's primary was a squeaker, with Chamberlin winning by 12 votes and Cruz topping Pat Kemp by 58 votes. Cruz declared victory Tuesday night, but Kemp, who chairs the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, refused to concede, saying she wanted to wait until the canvassing board considers provisional ballots Thursday. But with only 26 provisional ballots cast, even if Kemp wins every one of them, she still loses the election and it won't even trigger a recount.
