Davis Attacks Smith Scandal Ties

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis is coming out swinging at rival Rod Smith's ties to American Institutional Services, which appears to be at the center of a criminal kickback probe and which gave $30,000 to a political group promoting Smith. From the Davis campaign:

"“Rod Smith’s cronies in Tallahassee concocted a fundraising scheme that would make Jack Abramoff proud, but it’s the kind of corruption that’s left Florida voters unhappy with the direction of our state. If Rod Smith wants to show that he’ll stand up for taxpayers, then he shouldn’t use the proceeds from a corrupt state contract to benefit his campaign for governor. He needs to send that money back to its rightful owner: the taxpayers of Florida,” said Earnest.
Last month, Smith and the two Republican candidates for governor refunded campaign contributions that were tied to AIS and its principals. The only campaign contribution from AIS that has yet to be returned is a $30,000 payment to an organization called Floridians for Responsible Government that Smith campaign officials acknowledged working with to promote Smith’s campaign for governor.
“Jim Davis is the only candidate in this race who didn’t accept contributions from this state contractor, and it illustrates that he’ll bring the kind of new, independent leadership that’s needed in Tallahassee to stand up to the well-connected special interests and protect the interests of Florida’s families,” said Earnest.
