Dean takes SD3 - by a hair
Charlie Dean narrowly defeated Dennis Baxley in the Senate District 3 Republican primary Tuesday. The victory was fueled by heavy turnout in Citrus County, where Dean was virtually a household name after serving as sheriff for 16 years then going on to the state House. He also got the backing of Nancy Argenziano, who held the seat before being picked for the PSC.
But Dean, 68, did not blow away Rep. Dennis Baxley as some thought he would. The Ocala Republican fared well in many counties and came up short by fewer than 400 votes. Results are here.
"I'm at a great juncture in life," Baxley told the Buzz. "I have a lot I can do as a citizen to serve my community. We've had a great ride. The last seven years have been a great time for me to participate."
Dean will take on Democrat Suzan Franks, who easily won her primary.
In the race to replace Dean in House District 43 seat, Republican Ron Schultz will take on Democrat Sophia Diaz-Fonseca.
It was a tough night for the Baxley family, as Damon Baxley lost a close one in the Republican primary to replace his dad in House District 24. Kurt Kelly took the contest.
