Deja Vu in District 55

A month after State Rep. Darryl Rouson joined the ranks of the state Legislature, his house seat is already being challenged. Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, will face his former opponent Charles McKenzie in the August primary.

McKenzie, a Meadowlawn Middle School teacher and state coordinator for Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, qualified by petition for the race this week.  He is the first candidate to do so. McKenzie, 51, placed second after Rouson in the three-way March Democratic primary.

Whoever wins the Democratic primary will also face at least one Republican, it appears. Paul J. D. Golding, 23, of Sarasota has qualified. He said he is a self-employed business man who specializes in firearms. Golding said he is also a former soldier and president of the Sarasota County Young Republicans.

District 55 includes parts of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Sarasota counties.
