Democratic Party boss fighting a redistricting process he once supported, Republicans say
Republican Party of Florida Chairman Dave Bitner released a letter today leveling a hypocrisy charge against his counterpart at the Florida Democratic Party, Rod Smith when it comes to re-drawing legislative districts.
Bitner's three-page letter (read it here) questions why Smith never asked for lawmakers to produce district maps in 2002 when he was an incumbent. Bitner implies it might have been because Smith picked up Democratic votes in the process helping him win re-election later that year.
Smith voted the 2002 redistricting plan when it was in committee. (Smith's response is here.)
"When he served as a legislator, Smith supported this very process," RPOF spokesman Brian Hughes said. "Now he is politicizing this important work and pandering to the liberal fringe by creating a misinformation campaign of fear and mistrust."
