Democrats for Crist

Republican Charlie Crist, pushing to expand his base in his race with Democrat Jim Davis, touted endorsements Monday from Democratic mayors in South Florida and black clergymen in Central Florida.

Mayors Jim Naugle of Fort Lauderdale and Susan Gottlieb of Aventura both endorsed Crist, calling him a candidate who would be responsive to the needs of South Florida.

Gottlieb's city is overwhelmingly Democratic. Asked what Davis could do to become stronger. In her area, Gottlieb said: "I think his knowledge of South Florida is sorely lacking."

In Orlando, Crist was warmly received by a group of about two dozen black pastors at a community center. Some are Republican but others, like the Rev. James Blount of St. Stephen AME church, are Democrats. "I think he's the best candidate," Blount said, praising Crist's support for doubling the $25,000 homestead exemption.
