For Democrats, A Longshot Search for Records

The Florida Democratic Party dropped a three-page public records request on Attorney General Charlie Crist, seeking "any and all communications" regarding former Rep. Mark Foley in the congressional page scandal. The request is comprehensive: It seeks any internet communication authored by Foley between Crist's office and "President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, former chief of staff Andrew Card, Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and respective staff ... "

Cyber-specialists in Crist's Jacksonville office are assisting the FBI and FDLE in the case. For the Democrats, this is another way to get a story out there with the names "Crist" and "Foley" in the same sentence.

Crist's spokeswoman, JoAnn Carrin, cited a public records exemption in Florida statutes (119.07[2] (c)1, which keeps secret "active criminal intelligence information and active criminal investigative information." Said Carrin: "I can't say whether there are documents or not, but if there were, they would be exempt."
