Democrats target Bill Young in ad, phone calls

National Democrats announced they will target U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young with phone calls and newspaper ads over potential cuts to Social Security. The party says it's organized e-mail, automated and live phone calls and the ad (above) on Young, R-Indian Shores. Young's stance on the issures is on his Web site, where he says he works to protect Social Security.

The ads are part of efforts to target 10 Republicans. From the news release:

“Everyone agrees we need to cut spending, but Representative Bill Young is making the wrong choice by forcing seniors to shoulder the burden and while not asking Big Oil companies making record profits to sacrifice even the smallest amount,” said Jennifer Crider of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “The DCCC will go district-by-district to stop Representative Bill Young and House Republicans’ plans to cut seniors’ hard earned benefits in the middle of a recession just so Big Oil companies can keep their taxpayer subsidies.”

UPDATE: It should be noted that Young voted for stopping taxpayer subsidies for oil companies in amendment that failed in the House recently, and a similar measure several years ago. Oil companies also are not among the top 20 contributors in his 2010 re-election, according to Young also has historically opposed drilling off Florida's coast.

Text of the automated phone call, as released by the DCCC.

"Hi, this is _______calling on behalf of the DCCC.  Did you know that Representative Bill Young is part of a majority of the Republicans in Washington pushing to cut seniors benefits in Social Security and Medicare? If we don’t act now, 153,757 seniors here in Florida could have their benefits cut in the middle of a recession.

"Everyone knows that Social Security belongs to the people who worked their whole life to pay into the system. But Representative Bill Young wants to use Social Security and Medicare as a piggy bank for the government.

"We can’t turn Social Security over to Wall Street banks or make Medicare into a voucher system.

"Press 1 now to be connected with Representative Bill Young and tell him to cut taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil, not seniors Social Security and Medicare benefits.
