District 9 Race Hits TV

Republican David Langheier was the first to reach the airwaves this week with spots on CNN, Fox, Lifetime, etc. According to his wife Vicki, the producer was a local consultant, George Chacanias.

Meanwhile, Republican Gus Bilirakis has begun shooting footage for TV spots, said his campaign manager, Rob Whitney. FEC records show Bilirakis paid $38,000 to Stevens Reed Curcio & Potholm, the Alexandria, Va., producer of the Swift Boat Veterans ad campaign. The firm made national news again last month when U.S. News & World Report wrote about a spot for Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine using doctored images of the Twin Towers (later replaced).  Whitney said it is too early to say what direction the Bilirakis ads will take, but Bilirakis is confident in their consultant, Erik Potholm.

"We're very comfortable with Erik," he said.

Production is not yet underway for Democrat Phyllis Busansky, but her campaign manager Robert Becker said they've hired Washington, DC-based Struble Eichenbaum Communications. The consultant produced a Naral Pro-Choice America spot about then-Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, which was pulled off the air after critics complained it was misleading and unfair.
