Dockery calls label SunRail 'billion-dollar boondoggle'
The soothing voice of state Sen. Paula Dockery of Lakeland, a Republican candidate for governor, is being heard on robo calls across North Florida this weekend. She is urging people to show up for a rally Monday in opposition to rail legislation pending before the Legislature.
Here's part of the script, in which Dockery does not say she's running for governor: "Are you worried about wasteful government spending? My name is Sen. Paula Dockery and I'm calling to invite you to an important taxpayer Tea Party, this Monday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Capitol building in downtown Tallahassee. The state Legislature is currently trying to pass a billion-dollar boondoggle called SunRail, and I need your help to defeat it. This train system will lead to higher taxes and can take away funds from education."
This is the first direct evidence of the rail issue being injected into a statewide political campaign (even though the disclaimer makes it clear that the tea party group, Americans for Prosperity, is paying the freight).
