Dorworth losing grip on House seat as ballot count grows for challenger

Orlando Sentinel: State Rep. Chris Dorworth’s grip on a Seminole County state House seat slipped some more Thursday night, as election officials reviewed the final ballots remaining in his incredibly close contest against Democratic challenger Mike Clelland.

Clelland, a lawyer and former Longwood firefighter, saw his lead over Dorworth, R-Lake Mary, grow from 37 votes to 123 votes — out of nearly 74,000 cast — after the Seminole County canvassing board spent nearly six hours reviewing leftover, “provisional ballots.” Those are contingency ballots cast whenever elections workers are unable to verify a voter’s registration status at the polling station.

Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Mike Ertel said that only a tiny handful of votes remain uncounted in the race — almost certainly not enough to change the outcome. “Right now, I think we have a fairly clear picture of the direction it’s going,” Ertel said. (full story here)
