FAMU Pres will step down right away, trustees decide

16

July

Update: Provost Robinson will assume the role as leader of FAMU, but is expected to come before the FAMU Board of Trustees at its next meeting in August for them to decide whether to officially appoint him interim president.

Florida A&M University President James Ammons, who last week announced plans to resign in October amid a growing list of problems at the university, will now step down immediately. That decision was the first order of business of the FAMU Board of Trustees during an emergency conference call this morning.

Now the trustees are debating who to appoint in the interim. Several members want to tap FAMU Provost Larry Robinson, while others want to take a little more time to find an interim replacement, with Robinson informally assuming presidential duties in the meantime. A vote is forthcoming.

Trustees are also expected to discuss the logistics of a formal search committee for the permanent president, including how much it will cost.

FAMU's is one of two particularly important open presidency slots, with the Florida Board of Governors recently expressing interest in having a larger role in the search process.
