Fasano scores partial victory in privatization fight
On the Senate floor Wednesday, Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, scored a partial victory on the issue of expanding privatization of the state prison system. By a voice vote, senators voted to eliminate language that would privatize probation services in an 18-county region of South Florida, from the Keys to Bradenton.
The main budget bill (SB 2000) still would privatize all state prisons in those counties, but not probation services.
"We're halfway there," Fasano said after the vote. "We've convinced our colleagues that we can't privatize public safety and they agreed with me." The House budget awaiting a floor vote Thursday would privatize probation services in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
