Feeney's statement to the Times
Here is Rep. Tom Feeney's statement to the St. Petersburg Times last night:
The Justice Department has been investigating activity surrounding Jack Abramoff. The Justice Department has contacted Rep. Feeney to request more information regarding this matter and he is pleased to voluntarily cooperate.
Rep. Tom Feeney has answered questions from the Committee on Standards, reporters, editorial boards, and his constituents regarding the 2003 trip to Scotland. It is important to note that Rep. Feeney proactively brought the travel discrepancy to the attention of the Committee on Standards and asked for their advice. In alerting the committee to the discrepancy, he asked for their guidance.
In January, the Committee on Standards made no findings to suggest that Rep. Feeney violated any House rules and closed their file on this matter. Rep. Feeney considers this an embarrassing episode in his 17 year career as an elected official and an expensive lesson for him as a public servant.
Rep. Feeney accepted the Committee's decision and agreed to reimburse the U.S. Treasury in the amount of $5,643, the reported cost of the trip.
Rep. Feeney anticipates voluntarily cooperating with the Justice Department in any further investigation of this trip and looks forward to promptly resolving this matter.
